Last week a new customer made an enquiry with us for a no-fly cruise the Caribbean. One of their concerns was regarding seasickness / becoming travel sick whilst on board. We know that for those new to cruising, seasickness can be a worry, especially if you've experienced this before. However, sailing on a cruise ship is totally different to the experience you might have on a smaller boat trip, a ferry or even a cruise you did many decades ago.
In this blog I aim to explain some of the detail around what measures are taken to increase the on-board experience, and what you can do as a passenger to alleviate the symptoms of travel sickness should you be prone to this. So if you are worried about seasickness on your first cruise, hopefully once you've read the below you'll feel a little more optimistic.
Modern Cruise ships have significant advancements in technology to prevent passengers from feeling seasick whilst on board. The well-being and comfort of their guests are paramount, and several measures have been implemented to tackle the age-old issue of seasickness.
Stabilisation Systems: Modern cruise ships are equipped with advanced stabilisation systems that help minimise the rolling and pitching motion caused by ocean waves. These systems use sophisticated hydraulic and gyroscopic technology to stabilise the ship, providing a smoother sailing experience even in rough seas. As a result, passengers are less likely to experience motion-related discomfort.
Cabins with Windows or Balconies: When considering accommodations on a cruise ship, passengers are encouraged to choose cabins with windows or balconies, as these options can significantly reduce the likelihood of experiencing seasickness. Cabins with windows provide a visual connection to the outside world, allowing passengers to orient themselves and maintain a sense of balance, which can help mitigate the effects of motion. The natural light and soothing views of the sea contribute to a more enjoyable sailing experience. Moreover, cabins with balconies offer an extra advantage by providing access to fresh air and the opportunity to step outside, which can further alleviate feelings of seasickness. Being able to observe the motion of the ocean from a private vantage point allows passengers to acclimate to the ship's movement, reducing discomfort and enhancing overall comfort during the voyage. Hence, opting for a cabin with a window or balcony is a wise choice for those seeking a smoother and more pleasant cruise journey.
Medical Facilities and Medication: Cruise ships are well-equipped with medical facilities and staffed by qualified medical professionals who can provide assistance to passengers experiencing seasickness. They can administer medication to alleviate symptoms and offer medical advice on managing discomfort effectively.
Design and Engineering: Modern cruise ship designs take into account various factors to reduce the likelihood of passengers feeling seasick. This includes considerations of the ship's hull shape and size, weight distribution, and structural integrity. Engineering advancements ensure the vessel is stable and balanced, thereby minimising the potential for excessive motion.
Entertainment and Activities: Cruise ships offer a wide array of onboard entertainment and activities to keep passengers engaged and distracted from any feelings of seasickness. From live shows and performances to interactive games and workshops, there is always something to captivate passengers, taking their minds off the motion of the ship.
Enhanced Communication and Weather Navigation: Cruise ships employ state-of-the-art communication systems and advanced weather navigation technology to ensure a smoother voyage and reduce the risk of encountering rough seas. These sophisticated systems allow the ship's crew to monitor weather patterns in real-time, identifying potential areas of inclement weather and high swells. By receiving up-to-date weather forecasts and ocean conditions, the ship's captain can make informed decisions to alter the vessel's course, if necessary, to steer clear of adverse weather and rough seas. This proactive approach not only helps prevent passengers from experiencing discomfort due to seasickness but also ensures the safety and well-being of everyone on board. The ability to navigate away from unfavorable conditions enables modern cruise ships to provide a more stable and enjoyable sailing experience, allowing passengers to focus on their journey and make the most of their time at sea.
Research and Innovation: The cruise industry continually invests in research and innovation to improve passenger comfort. This includes studying the causes of seasickness and developing new technologies to prevent or alleviate symptoms effectively.
Thanks to these advancements, modern cruise ships aim to provide a more enjoyable and comfortable sailing experience for passengers, minimising the impact of seasickness and allowing them to fully appreciate the wonders of the open sea.
